Although The Boyds Collection LTD began specializing in antiques in 1979, it wasn't until 1984 when the first Boyds teddy bear was created. Boyds Maryland based company founders Gary Lowenthal and wife Justina Unger created their first teddy bear for their newborn son Matthew. This began a new venture for the company, sparking a whole new creation of various plush teddy bears simply called "Boyds Bears".
The company continued to grow and expand, eventually moving it's operations to Gettysburgh Pennsylvania. Not only did Boyds have a popular selection of stuffed bears, they also successfully created a very popular line of plush bunny rabbits. Many know The Boyds Collection LTD phrase "Bears and Hares You Can Trust", a phrase easily remembered by collectors of Boyds plush animals.
In addition to plush animals, The Boyds Collection LTD are very well known for their resin figurines, featuring a collection of teddy bears, gnomes, angels, and more. The company has achieved a great deal of success over the years, winning a variety of awards for the products they create. Boyds also is well known for their popular collectors club, known as the "Loyal Order of Friends of Boyds!".
