The History of Chad Valley Teddy Bears |
|
Chad Valley is known to have produced many popular teddy bears over the years. It all began in 1830 when printing business owner Anthony Bunn Johnson created a variety of childrens games as a side business. Several decades later his two sons branched off to a similar business, "Johnson Brothers", which eventually formed in to Chad Valley Company Limited.
During the time of the big teddy bear manufacturing craze, Chad Valley introduced their first jointed teddy bear in 1915. More bears were debuted during the 1920's, and success continued to follow. Some of the most popular teddy bears from Chad Valley included the Rainbow Tubby Bear, as well as the Magna Bear and Cubby Bear of the 1930's. The company would later create extremely popular bears of Winnie the Pooh, along with Sooty and Toffee bears in 1950's. Chad Valley experienced growth as the years went on, and by 1960 the company had well over 1000 employees working at seven factories.
Chad Valley took over Chiltern Toys in 1967, allowing the company to claim the name as largest manufacturer of soft toys in all of Great Britain. Some tough times were ahead for the company, shutting down all but one of their factories. This eventually led to Chad Valley being acquired by Palitoy, Kenner Parker, and finally Woolworth's in 1988.
