The History of Hermann Teddy Bears |
|
When one thinks of a high quality German made teddy bear, they think of HERMANN Teddy ORIGINAL. Hermann teddy bears are known for being primarily constructed of mohair, with standout features such as glass eyes and disk joints. And of course one of the most unique features of a HERMANN Teddy ORIGINAL is the notable facial features each bear is designed with.
The company was founded by Johann Hermann in the year 1907. Although the roots of the business began in Neufang Germany, Johann's oldest son Bernhard Hermann began producing bears for the company in Sonneberg during 1912. While fighting in World War I, Bernhard's wife Ida ran the business which was producing bears under the name BE-HA. After the war, Berhard was able to return and continue operations of the business successfully.
BE-HA bears were quite unique and were being exported to countries such as the United States, England, and France. The business fluctuted over the years, but eventually moved to Bavaria after World War II. After the move, the business was managed by Bernhard's sons. The company changed it's name from BE-HA to the more well known name of Teddy-Hermann. In 1986, it was Bernhard's grandaughters who began to take control of the business, making the company primarily a fourth generation business.
Those who collect Teddy-Hermann bears should know each bear's most important feature, the red seal. When looking for an authentic original Hermann bear, you should look for the red seal that is affixed to the bear. The red seal will have HERMANN Teddy ORIGINAL written on it in gold lettering. Every original bear will have this feature, and since 1994, every bear made also has the red seal affixed to the back of each bear's neck.
Teddy-Hermann bears are quite well known for their unique limited editions over the years. Many old and new series are sought after. The new series of the bears are designed by the talented English artist Deborah Canham. These limited design bears are named Albert, Anthony, Barnaby, Ernest, Jeremy, and Richard.
From the time Hermann bears were first produced, each bear sparkles with original and high quality features, making Teddy-Hermann bears enjoyable for all ages.
