Steiff is the most recognized teddy bear worldwide. The German based company was created by Margarete Steiff in the year 1880. This was the year when Margarete, along with her brother Fritz and nephew Richard, created their first soft filled fabric toy. Many are suprised to learn that Steiff's first soft filled toy was actually an elephant, not a bear. The stuffed elephant was a breakthrough hit amongst children of that era.
This of course paved the way for new creations. It wasn't too long after that more animals were being created and added to the line of Steiff products. The company experienced growth, and it was in 1902 that Richard Steiff was credited for creating the first teddy bear for the Steiff company. President Theodore Roosevelt, nicknamed "Teddy", played a key role in the naming of the bear.
Steiff is known for creating each and every animal with a "Button in Ear". This was done to distinguish real Steiff products from imitation products being offered at the same time. This turned out to be a fantastic business marketing strategy, which in turn increased their production as time went on. The Steiff company manufactured a whopping 974,000 teddy bears in 1907.
